Episode 4 - Richard Watson’s Future Files

• May 30th, 2010

Hello to everyone and thanks for downloading Episode 4 of the NerdHouse Podcast.

This episode was taken from the futurist Richard Watson's talk at the RSA back in September 2008. Richard is a very enjoyable public speaker and gives a spirited presentation of some of the trend and mashups that might affect our future. As scenario planning and practising futurist, I particular enjoyed his closing discussion about the paradox of trends existing simultaneously in a complex and multidimensional world.

I recorded this episode directly onto my laptop on a late night train from Edinburgh to London. I was coming back from a workshop I facilitated with a colleague on the future of a major infrastructure development in Edinburgh's harbour. One of the themes of the workshop was under-investment in public resources and infrastructure and, ironically, the train broke down on the way back.

I went ahead and recorded this episode while waiting on the tracks somewhere outside of Leeds. I didn't have my usual gear so some of the mixes are a bit hot. I was also several Stella's to the wind by that point, so apologies for the rough and ready feeling of this episode (such as the absence of a track listing). The circumstances give the episode an added edge I think, particularly in light of Richard's forecasts and predictions for a rapidly approaching future.

As always, please write me with ideas, comments or inspiration. Thanks again for listening and look out for Episode 5 someday soon.

Nerd House Episode 3: Dan Choi Overdrive

• March 17th, 2010

Hello again and welcome to Episode 3 of the Nerd House Podcast!

This episode brings you the story of love with a twist, told live by Lt. Dan Choi at the Moth main stage in NYC back in 2009 (YouTube video of the original, here). Dan's story isn't particularly nerdy, but he tells his story so powerfully and with such an uplifting surprise that I just couldn't resist remixing it.

A bio for Lt. Choi reads:
"An Iraq veteran is surprised to find himself suddenly at odds with a military law. Lt. Dan Choi is a West Point graduate and Iraq veteran fluent in Arabic. He is a founding member of Knights Out. www.KnightsOut.org."

Dan makes beautiful use of Arabic poetry through-out his story. His delivery is perfect and I really enjoyed picking the tracks to mix with this. The story is short, but brought tears of joy to my eyes in the end. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Track listing:

1. Uner and Coyu - Raw Sweat - Diynamic
2. Leif - Designed with that in Mind - Fear of Flying
3. Prompt - Evolve (Slam Paragraph Remix) - 7noise

Thanks again for listening. Episode 4 has already been recorded and I will be releasing it in a week or two for your nerdy pleasure. As always, please feel free to contact me through twitter at @nraford, or leave comments below.

Nerd House Episode 2: The Dean Kamen Minimix

• November 6th, 2009

Hi everyone, here is a quick minimix following on the heals of Episode One: Bruce Sterling.

In this episode I remix a lovely short interview from the brilliant inventor Dean Kamen, speaking at the Big Think, where he talks about the struggles and difficulties of bringing a new idea into this world. Everyone makes it out to be so easy, but in reality it takes years of struggle, frustration, confusion and doubt. I'm struggling to finish my PhD at the moment and this message really hit home for me. Nothing new is ever easy, except after the fact. That's just the price of creation. Thank you Dean, for this wonderful reminder, from a real master.

The interview is short, around 5 minutes, so I spent a lot of time picking a single, perfect track to go with it. I ended up choosing "Dismantling Frank" by Bonobo, off his original "Terrapin" release on Tru Thoughts Recordings. This is a moody and melodic 6/8 song, which has this fantastic melancholic, almost nostalgic feel to it. I thought it would be a perfect match for the tone of Dean Kamen's voice, which despite all his successes and victories, still contains the subtle wisdom of defeat.

Thanks to everyone who has already written in and subscribed to this podcast; I promise to keep them coming as fast as I find inspiration. Next episode will likely be Juan Enriquez or Kevin Kelly's Seminars from the Long Now Foundation, unless I find something else that strikes my fancy in the mean time. In the mean time, please send me an email or comments with your thoughts on this, or any other, episode. I'd love to hear your feelings about the "Nerd House" genre.

Thanks for listening and keep your eyes out for Episode 3!

Nerd House Episode 1: Bruce Sterling

• November 3rd, 2009

This is the first episode of Noah's "Nerd House" podcast. Nerd house mixes two of my favorite things, deep intellectual lectures and public talks with deep, emotional techno and house music.

For this mix I used Bruce Sterling's closing lecture from the Reboot 11 conference.  I downloaded the video as an MP4, extracted the audio using Fusion as a .wav, then mixed that live using Traktor and an external midi controller.

This was my first attempt at blending the two genres. I learned several things.  First, the whole show was recorded in one take, which provides for some spontaneous moments of emergence and excitement.  I didn't do any post-processing or editing other than conversion of the final .wav file to MP3 and then adding a voice over at the introduction.

In general I think the live mixing approach worked well, but you be the judge.  Because I was mixing live and with no preplanning, a really interesting conversation began to emerge between the peaks and valleys of Bruce's talk and the peaks and valleys of the music beneath.  This was totally emergent and unexpected, adding additional energy and emphasis in some places and reducing the energy in others.

In some cases, for example, the music led the transitions in the talk by a few seconds, presaging a big shift in tone or topic. In other cases it was the other way around, where a shift in the message of the speech proceeded a shift in the music. There were also a couple of cases where they both correspond perfectly, creating a couple of particularly effective, high intensity moments.

All of this created a really interesting back and forth between the "music" of the talk and the "message" of the music.  Next time I'll program out a few key transition points in the message of the talk and keep these in mind as "targets" to mix towards as the house music progresses. We'll see how that works.

Next episode I plan on showcasing either Kevin Kelley's talk at the Long Now Foundation a few years back, one of my favorite Martin Luther King, Jr. speech from the CBC Massey Lectures, or one of my favorite Dave Snowden lectures from Australia.

If anyone listens to this I'd really love your feedback, either on the house, the lecture, or on their dialogue.  Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 2!
